Quote - "There is scarcely any writer who has not celebrated the happiness of rural privacy, and delighted himself and his reader with the melody of birds, the whisper of groves, and the murmur of rivulets." ~Samuel Johnson.
I see this list of countryside noises doesn’t include diggers ripping up the earth, the continuous drone of dumper trucks culminating with the roaring of high speed trains. Mr Johnson would be turning in his grave.
Let's all remember this is just the beginning. We will have the HS3 route announced soon and the price of that will dwarf HS2.
Been out detecting today and found 1575 silver sixpence on land that is due to be bulldozed for HS2. That makes me quite sad that the field has laid at peace for so long and now we are going to rip it apart, concrrete over it, encasing its secrets for ever.
Just arriving. London to Lichfield in 1:06. Very quick! Maybe some WD40 for the squeaky seat. Probably get a can for less than 17bln. No need for another route.
Andrew's comments below on electrification are very interesting; a proposal I haven't seen before. Great post!
Tomorrow I am travelling to Lichfield by rail. I am catching a very modern, fast service from London. It will take 1 hour 6 minutes. I'm happy with that! I like watching the unspoiled countryside from the train window, and I would rather my tax money was spent on education for my children or other worthy candidates.
Reasons why to help start our campaign to say ‘No’ to the HS2 – High Speed Rail Link.
We need your help to raise awareness of the damage that will be inflicted on our farming heritage if this proposal goes ahead.
Did you know:
The cost of the HS2 projected estimated at £17.4bln. Its aim is to reduce journey times from London to Birmingham by 10 minutes. That equates to £160m per mile or £1.74 billion for each minute saved.
The full network would concrete an area the size of Manchester
The 72 metres ‘no vegetation’ width is wider than Wembley (69 metres).
The HS2 rail link will scar our countryside slashing areas of natural beauty.
Farming communities will be targeted as land is compulsory purchased; our farming heritage is under attack.
Personally, our family farm will be demolished, bringing to an end of three generations of farming. The farm shop that serves as an outlet for local farmers will also be flattened.
If you feel as strongly as I do about sticking up for farming in the UK then please vote for our campaign
I love this campaign. Yes a country needs infrastrcuture but there becomes a point where enough is enough and I think we have reached that point. We dont need to spend this vastamount of money on what will be a small decrease injourney times for a few people. What we do need to do is look after our countryside; imagine what £170 bln could do to help maintain our farming heritage.Nick supported this idea ·
Love this campaign. There is another campaign idea on HS2 gaining massive momentum (currently 4th) . Take a look and if you, like place your vote.
