Many rural services would be cut if it weren't for usage by pensioners. They certainly could not afford some of the fares currently charged.
And - do we want to see our older citizens confined to 24 hour daytime television? I think not.

The universal bus pass for pensioners is not a 'perk' because it
reduces congestion and pollution on the roads
leads to more exercise and reduces obesity
improves the quality of life for millions of pensioners
Any costs incurred in providing it are more than offset by savings in health service and road maintenance.
