Spending 1% of public funds on the Arts
Independent research has shown that the cultural sector brings in many times more income than is currently spent on it - West End theatre alone pays back 150% to the nation in VAT what the whole of England and Wales receive from the Arts Council. Entertainment unions (Equity, BECTU, MU, NUJ, etc) are calling for just 1% of national expenditure to be spent on the Arts (current spending is less than 0.1%) to boost activity from both within the UK and from overseas visitors.
1% investment for a much bigger return from the economic benefits the Arts provide. Common sense please???
