HS2 - High Speed Rail Link. We dont need to spend £160m per mile

Costing over £160m per mile, the proposed HS2 High Speed Rail Link will not only help further bankrupt our country but will slash and scar our countryside, leaving a permanent reminder to our children of politics gone mad and a dynasty of greed of gargantuan proportions.

        Who is going to build this thing anyway? Presumably the trains will be French, German or Japanese, the digging equipment German or American, the labour Polish, South African or other Eastern European.The contract will have to go to a French or Japanese company with relevant expertise.The price will be fixed in Euros or $ because the £ is expected to carry on depreciating.
        The financial case is non existent,the project would destroy one of the few remaining pleasant parts of the South East and there is no real demand for it.

        Get real you people, unless you can get some concrete arguments against it, it will go ahead.

        Wishy washy claims that it will damage dicky birds are not enough. Can you get some experts who know what they are talking about. (I don't).
        At the moments the arguments seem to be bird watchers v train spotters with politicians looking for a grand project to boost their egos and their legacy..They will be long gone when eventuallythe line is built and the damage done.

        Totally in favour of HS2 going ahead. As someone who has an active interest in the rail industry, I've been following this for a while and it's really our option. Sure, we can try to upgrade our existing lines, but we spent £6 billion upgraded the West Coast Main Line recently and all those improvements will still mean it runs out of capacity in less than 20 years time. Any more small-scale improvements will only cause more misery for those who use the trains regularly and only deliver modest improvements in capacity - at best, they'll put off the need for a totally new railway line for a few more years.

        We need a new railway line. A new line would free up capacity on other lines, meaning that not only will overcrowding go down, but hopefully fares - right now, train companies can charge high fares at peak times because they know the trains will fill. Demand for rail travel is increasing fast, and we need that extra capacity to meet the demand.

        It's no wonder all the major political parties are behind this. A fast, regular north-south service will get people out of short-haul flights (which are by far the worst offenders for emissions and contributions to climate change), and bring major economic benefits to northern areas which the recession has hit hard.

        Yes, it's expensive, but that's the price to pay for what will be a world class railway network. We led the world in the 19th century with our railways, why can't we do it again?

        We already have railway lines going to all the destinations. All that is needed is greater investment in the existing networks. That will suit all needs. People needing to get to up North and to Scotland at high speed can fly there.

        Complete white elephant , no business case , burden on future tax payers ,

        In the current economic climate it seems ridiculous to spend this overwhelming amount of money on the HS2 project. The rail ticket prices are so high that this high speed traiin will benefit relatively few people. Also our beautiful countryside and wild life will be ruined. The local villages and towns along route will not benefit at all and it will distroy these communities including noise, road delays and destruction during the building work followed by the noise and wildlife distruction as 18 trains per hour whizz by.

        This rail link will decimate the environment and it will cost too much to pay for and run. In conjunction with this, other rail services will be pared down and not many people will benefit from HS2. Scrap it!

        If someone asked you to spend £160m per mile to make something worse, would you do it? Neither commercially nor environmentally nor morally sound. There are no benefits of this plan to the communities it will tear through, is money this country can ill afford and will destroy areas of outstanding natural beauty.

        In the current climate, we cannot afford to think about spending this amount of money The existing railway needs a lot of improvement and the fares need to be made more affordable to encourage more to use it especially for longer journeys. We cannot compare our country to larger ones who have plenty of room to increase their railway infrastructure. To even consider this at a time when public services are being cut is morally wrong.

        Our beautiful small country is too small to cut right thro it with this monstrosity of a rail line, we are not France or Germany where it wont be noticed. We cannot afford it and our children and Grandchildren will be paying the price for this it will be a millstone round their necks for generations to come.

        I agree that the HS2 is a ridiculous waste of money especially when our country is already struggling. It will leave a terrible scar across the country which could never be rectified. Surely it would be better to spend money on our existing infrastructure which would benefit everybody and not just those who want to save twenty minutes on a journey from Birmingham to London and who can afford the extra fare that will be imposed. We must fight this ridiculous plan because in a few years time it will be sold off at a loss like HS1 and another great part of our beautiful country will ruined.

        Wrong, sad and unbelievable to consider destroying an area of such beautiful countryside and the natural environment and habitat it supports. Unnecessary and needs the business case to be looked at carefully - it cannot stack up. How does the business case factor in the damage to the environment and what benefits are there? Improvements to existing routes is something that needs consideration before carving up any more irreplacable countryside.

        Concorde demonstated that although high speed travel is feasible it is not automatically needed or wanted or economic. High speed rail travel is not necessary in a small country such as UK. If it is essentai lto prop up the construction industry, th eexisting routes should be expanded in capacity by introducing larger trains, raising bridges etc.

        The business case is doubtful in the extreme (see the Economist this week).Unfortunately too many politicians see votes in investing in 20th or 19th century technology. Communication in the 21st century will not be about shifting masses of people between London and The North
        at whatever speed. If there really is a case, try to get the city to invest in it.
        Is your MP brave enough to get his party to backtrack on a ludicrous commitment.
