Campaign suggestions

Welcome!

What is this part of the website for?
- 38 Degrees members decide together what we campaign on. One way members can suggest campaigns is through this part of the website.
- This part of the website also helps determine how popular campaigns are through the voting system.
- You can vote on campaigns other 38 Degrees members suggest here You have up to 10 votes you can use.

How can I suggest a campaign?
- If you’ve got an idea for what 38 Degrees should campaign on please share it here.
-By adding your campaign idea here you’ll give other 38 Degrees members the opportunity to comment, suggest improvements and vote on your idea.
- The most popular suggestions made here will be put to 38 Degrees members to discuss and vote on in other ways – e.g. on our facebook, twitter and blog, and through email polls.
- Get involved and have your say – your campaign might be the next to start an avalanche!

How do I use my vote?
- Every member has up to 10 votes, which you are free to use how ever you want.
- If you really keen on a particular campaign, you can use more than one vote. – We will email you when when your ideas are completed or deleted as your votes will return to you.
- You can also change your votes by clicking on them.
- You’ll get a digested email of any activity on your ideas, comments, status changes and admin responses.

What happens to my campaign suggestions and votes?
- 38 Degrees campaigns are driven by what members want to do. Uservoice one of a number of ways in which 38 Degrees members can say what they one to the 38 Degrees to work on.
- If an idea is really popular on this Uservoice part of the website 38 Degrees will consult members about the idea in other ways e.g. through discussions on our blog and Facebook group and through member surveys.
- Please note that an idea being popular on this part of the website does not guarantee that it will become a 38 Degrees campaign. This is because firstly this area of the site is not visted by all 38 Degrees members and secondly because it is possible for non-members to vote. This can potentially skew the results. If in a member survey the wider 38 Degrees membership says other issues are more important, those issues will take priority.
- If 38 Degrees members vote that an idea should be a priority in our main member survey as well as on this part of the web site, the 38 Degrees office team will start work to turn it into a campaign. You can see the results of these main member surveys here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/tag/poll/

Can I ask others to boost the ranking of my issue?
- It might feel tempting to try and boost the ranking of your favorite issue by encouraging loads of people not involved with 38 Degrees to come and vote for it.
- Please don’t do this — this is intended as a space for 38 Degrees members to discuss together what they want us to do.

Are there any rules?
- It’s really important that the 38 Degrees website is a place where we can all have a healthy debate – which is why we don’t moderate comments or campaign suggestions before they are published. However, to ensure our site stays family friendly we have a few rules that you can read here:
http://38degrees.org.uk/pages/comments-policy

I suggest a campaign about ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Reverse the State Pension Law

Give us the same transitional protection that MP's, Judges and Civil Servants were given against the changes to their pension schemes.

They were given 10 years protection whilst we were given as little as 18 months notice of the changes made to the State Pension.

    Is this fair and equitable?

    • MP's PAYE or limited companies?

I'm curious about how many MP's could be avoiding the higher rate of incombe tax. by registering themselves as Limited Companies. therfor only paying 20% corporation tax instead of the upper rate of incombe tax of 40%. surely as MP's they are employed by the state. and there fore should by default be PAYE. The same rulse should apply to civil servants, but i believe they are playing the same game. It would warrant some investigation at least.

      • Gary Barlow have his OBE removed

Jockey Lester Piggott had his OBE removed when he was found guilty of tax evasion. Jimmy Carr was called "morally wrong" for avoiding tax by the Prime Minister. Yet Gary Barlow has neither lost his OBE or been condemned for knowingly avoiding tax on millions of pounds of earnings. The PM says Barlow does a lot of good work for Children in Need - well it's a good job he does, since there are more children in need because of tax avoiders like him than ever before.

So regardless of whether he's a good bloke or not, we cannot set…

        • Mare Nostrum migrant rescue operation in the Mediterranean

The hard pressed Italian navy should not be left to deal with hundreds of thousands of migrants in the Mediterranean alone. Our government should reverse its shameful decision to abandon these people to their fate and other European governments should all support this operation or something similar rather than leave desperate people to drown.

          • Take on the PFI companies

I suggest you float this one again - Recover Money for NHS from greedy PFI companies that underperform - I believe the climate is right for this have just watched a youtube video posted by NHA of a CH4 news item this week interviewing Robert Eyre the only one to comment on your last forum post in 2013 - this is what he said ...

'By simply enforcing the existing woeful PFI contracts strongly. the NHS will recover at least £10Million per site.
It equates to over a £Billion across all sectors ad sites and would mean less cuts in…

            • Fight the Crown Estate residential property sell off

The Crown Estates has for many generations rented farms and residential properties to the public - the South-West having a substantial part of these. As a result many families have remained in the same properties for years (Often generations). Over the past few years Crown Estates have decided to turn their attentions to developing retail/business assets in... guess where? Yup, London. As a result they need vast amounts of cash to fund this. To get this cash it looks as though they are rapidly selling off swathes of the rural estate. Tenants are being given 2 months to quit -…

                • Stop HMRC Selling Tax Payer Financial Data

The plan for HMRC to sell tax payer financial data has just been announced. I really think we need a Care.data style campaign - which was immediately successful in achieving a significant delay to those plans. There's an article here http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/apr/18/hmrc-to-sell-taxpayers-data. These plans to sell so-called 'anonymised' data are really wrong!

                    • Stop the privatisation of child protection services.

The power to take children away from their families could be privatised along with other child protection services under controversial plans the government has quietly announced.

The proposal from Michael Gove's Department for Education (DfE) to permit the outsourcing of children's social services in England to companies such as G4S and Serco has alarmed experts. They say profit-making companies should not be in charge of such sensitive family matters, and warn that the introduction of the profit motive into child protection may distort the decision-making process.

                      • Stopping troubled children becoming an investment opportunity

Making money out of tragic children is the extreme end of the outsourcing culture. The history of contracting and privatisation has mainly been high cost and high profit for worse service. This 30-year policy has, without evidence, been driven by contempt for the idea of a public ethos, and conviction that private is always best.

An 18% return on the most disturbed and needy children in care homes is the extreme end of Britain's outsourcing culture according to a report by Polly Toynbee today.

'In the two years between 2010 and 2012 outsourcing to private children’s homes rose 8% to…

I'd read the other day there was a protest in London outside the Chinese Embassy to put pressure on the Chinese Government to make the ivory trade illegal. Apparently there was 150 people there, if I had know I would have gone too. We need to get more involved and get something done. I'd like to start a petition to get 100,000's on signatures to take to No 10 and the Chinese Embassy to SAVE this graceful creatures from extinction. We need to educate people that the herbal remedies do not work and owning ivory a crime. I don't know…

The British security services, MI5, and the Home Office are attempting to apply for a secret court hearing under JSA 2013 for no other reason that to cover-up their own embarrassment and wrong doing. The Martin McGartland case relates to MI5's withdrawing of medical support after he was shot 7 times as a result of work he carried out on their behalf. More importantly, the case has nothing at all to do with his undercover work in Northern Ireland, it concerns MI5's failings, breach of duty of care, at a time when they were meant to be looking after, supporting…

                                  • Demanding that British Airways stops flying passengers over Iraq

Why are BA jeopardising passenger safety when other major airlines have deemed it to be unsafe to overfly Iraq?

                                    • Introduce Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) in the UK. Replace Welfare.

Let's move a step into the future. A step that would make our world a better place and solve a lot of problems like homelessness, hunger, minimum wage and employee strikes.

Introducing a (UBI) Unconditional Basic Income allows each and every UK citizen to receive a sum amount of money that allows you to live with the bare minimum without the need to go through tests of legibility.

It would become a human right to receive enough money to live on.

                                      How nice would that be?

We all know how unfairly treated the citizens of the United Kingdom are by…

                                      • Politicians to confront the paedophilia within the establishment.

It's the huge elephant in the room. Ignored by both politicians and generally society at large. We need to stop turning a blind eye to it. Children have no voice. Children are our future. Children are being preyed upon by members of Parliament the judiciary the police social services and royalty.
There is no way that if you work within the Commons or House of Lords that you haven't heard the rumours of fellow colleagues. It's time Parliament dealt with this head on and confront its dark secrets.
Or are we to wait for the deaths of those guilty before…
