Campaign suggestions

Welcome!

What is this part of the website for?
- 38 Degrees members decide together what we campaign on. One way members can suggest campaigns is through this part of the website.
- This part of the website also helps determine how popular campaigns are through the voting system.
- You can vote on campaigns other 38 Degrees members suggest here You have up to 10 votes you can use.

How can I suggest a campaign?
- If you’ve got an idea for what 38 Degrees should campaign on please share it here.
-By adding your campaign idea here you’ll give other 38 Degrees members the opportunity to comment, suggest improvements and vote on your idea.
- The most popular suggestions made here will be put to 38 Degrees members to discuss and vote on in other ways – e.g. on our facebook, twitter and blog, and through email polls.
- Get involved and have your say – your campaign might be the next to start an avalanche!

How do I use my vote?
- Every member has up to 10 votes, which you are free to use how ever you want.
- If you really keen on a particular campaign, you can use more than one vote. – We will email you when when your ideas are completed or deleted as your votes will return to you.
- You can also change your votes by clicking on them.
- You’ll get a digested email of any activity on your ideas, comments, status changes and admin responses.

What happens to my campaign suggestions and votes?
- 38 Degrees campaigns are driven by what members want to do. Uservoice one of a number of ways in which 38 Degrees members can say what they one to the 38 Degrees to work on.
- If an idea is really popular on this Uservoice part of the website 38 Degrees will consult members about the idea in other ways e.g. through discussions on our blog and Facebook group and through member surveys.
- Please note that an idea being popular on this part of the website does not guarantee that it will become a 38 Degrees campaign. This is because firstly this area of the site is not visted by all 38 Degrees members and secondly because it is possible for non-members to vote. This can potentially skew the results. If in a member survey the wider 38 Degrees membership says other issues are more important, those issues will take priority.
- If 38 Degrees members vote that an idea should be a priority in our main member survey as well as on this part of the web site, the 38 Degrees office team will start work to turn it into a campaign. You can see the results of these main member surveys here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/tag/poll/

Can I ask others to boost the ranking of my issue?
- It might feel tempting to try and boost the ranking of your favorite issue by encouraging loads of people not involved with 38 Degrees to come and vote for it.
- Please don’t do this — this is intended as a space for 38 Degrees members to discuss together what they want us to do.

Are there any rules?
- It’s really important that the 38 Degrees website is a place where we can all have a healthy debate – which is why we don’t moderate comments or campaign suggestions before they are published. However, to ensure our site stays family friendly we have a few rules that you can read here:
http://38degrees.org.uk/pages/comments-policy

I suggest a campaign about ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • campaign for widows rights to their spouses pension.

To ensure widows have rights to their spouses state pension when they have paid full national insurance for 40 years, and not re label the widowed mother's allowance to widowed parents allowance after the spouse has retired, leaving no option for the retired person to provide security in the event of death.

      • Stopping the slaughter for halal meat of animals and poultry without them first being stunned.

I understand from the RSPCA that this is illegal yet thousands of animals and birds are being killed daily in this way, as was shown on BBC program Countryfile 2 weeks ago. These animals have their throats cut and bleed to death all in the name of religion.

          • Children in care and after-care (documentary)

My name is Chris Harper and I am 38 degree member. I have taken up the challenge to make a documentary to provoke awareness of the young adults who are leaving the care system.

These youngsters receive virtually no support or after-care once they have left foster care. There are at this moment in time 70,000 children within the care system, 4 out of 5 young adults who leave the care system will be involved in crime and prison or caught up in drugs and manipulated into prostitution, or more recently grooming by certain gangs.

            30% of all homeless in…

              • Getting local authorities to remove fluoride from our drinking water

We are "forcefully medicated" by the addition of fluoride to our water, this should be a choice, we have the option of using fluoridated dental products if we wish, so why don't we have the right to fluoride free water.

                • Taxing Overseas Corporations - Using a Transaction Tax

I want government to create a new tax 'Transaction Tax' that is levied at the point of sale and can be set against UK corporation tax. Using this instrument it would force overseas corporations to pay some corporation tax in the UK. Transaction Tax that is not off-set against UK corporation Tax would remain in the governments coffers.

E.g. Amazon pays 15 Transaction Tax when it makes a sale - lets say £1000. The VAT mechanism would collect this cheaply. In our example Amazon would pay £150. This could then be off-set against UK Corporation Tax. So other than cash…

                  • Transatlantic Trade Deal

Written by George Monbiot in the Guardian 04.11.13:

Remember that referendum about whether we should create a single market with the United States? You know, the one that asked whether corporations should have the power to strike down our laws? No, I don't either. Mind you, I spent 10 minutes looking for my watch the other day before I realised I was wearing it. Forgetting about the referendum is another sign of ageing. Because there must have been one, mustn't there? After all that agonising over whether or not we should stay in the European Union, the government wouldn't cede…

                    • Oppose cuts to the environment agency

The recent floods have shown the value of the work done by the environment agency in protecting peoples lives, homes, farmland and our natural environment. The government are proposing budget cuts which will lead to the loss of 1,700 jobs around 15 percent of the workforce. Let's use the issue as an example of how the government is cutting back on public services which affect all our lives.

                      • Against forced academies and the privatisation of our education system by stealth

Our government is forcing schools to become academies against the majority consensus. They are ignoring parents, schools and local authorities. They are using bullying tactics to hand schools to academy chains, run by major Tory donors. They are not only forcing failing schools but good ones and allowing these chains to cherry pick good schools to give academy policy credibility. Parents all over the UK are starting to organise themselves. 'Parents Against Forced Academies' are calling for a public enquiry into the bullying and likely corruption endemic to forced academy process. Decisions about handing over our public schools to academy…

Trying to make senior politicians understand just how much we, the voters, are disillusioned with the way they are neither accountable for their actions like the rest of us are, nor justified in their disdainful disregard for the spirit of the rules they operate within

                          • should we have a referendem on whether we should have a referendem

We had a referendum in London as to whether we wanted to have a Mayor and an Assembley to run London.

Why can we not have a referendum on Europe as to whether we have a referendum : Now or on a set date or after the election or Not at all.

I think this would be very interesting to find out

David Cameron intends to enforce "Filters" on every internet connection in the UK, under the pretence that this will stop the distribution of Child porn. This is a thinly disguised attempt to install a censorship mechanism in the UK

                              • Increasing state pensions so that our olderpeople, who have worked all their lives, are no longer the worst paid in Europe and beyond.

Basically, increasing state pensions, so that older people in our country aren't so poorly paid. Respect? At first pensions can be based on average incomes as they were before Thatcher changed it to make them lower.

                                • Stop the NHS being abused by Medical Practitioners - i.e. Refer patients without even examining them.

Over the last year I have had occasion to use the NHS for 2 health problems, one for atrial fibrillation & the 2nd for a growth on my foot.
I first visited my local GP in October for a small growth on my foot. I was told I was being referred to another doctor. After a month I went back as I had heard nothing and was again told I was being referred (my growth was getting bigger!) - another 2 weeks, still nothing so went back and was told I was being referred. A week later was told I…

                                  • I was born OF this land, not FOR this and... I want my freedom! Even slaves could gain their freedom.

Bring in our most basic human right of being able to "opt out" of society. This thing I was born into was not of my making, nor do I wish to be part of it! I should be able to live my life as a true human and not as a captive human, I am completely against slavery and wholesale abuse! The government need to pass a law to "opt out" seeing as nobody actually signed up for it! I wasn't even born, before it swallowed me whole...

                                    • Improving the testing, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease in line with current research not biased American guidelines

Lyme disease is frequently misdiagnosed, in the early stages as flu, cellulitis, rash, fevers; in the late stages as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME), fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease (ALS), lupus, glandular fever etc. Despite many of these latter syndromes having no diagnostic test or treatment, a diagnosis is made due to the lyme test being negative in many cases. Yet a paper by the former head of the lyme borreliosis unit showed 14% of screening tests do not pick up a borrelia infection (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21117376 ), without a positive screening test the NHS will not pursue further testing or…

                                      • The Trans-Atlantic Trade Treaty is a real threat to democracy. For details see http://action.sumofus.org/a/stop-ttip/?sub=fb

Campaign against our government signing a treaty which will allow large corporations to over turn our laws of they clash with the corporations business interests in our country e.g. smoking advertising and restrictions or fracking for gas

                                        • STOP SOPPY E-MAIL POLITICS

It's too easy: don't think, just react, with a push of a button, just dilute a formal democracy painfully shaped over 800 years. I Know! Let's do elections by facebook, Parliament by Twitter; It's so cooool and simple. I hardly have to think at all. Even my gerbil can do it. And if we signed up all our pets - gerbils, buggies, hamsters, whatever - we'd get things done, so much faster. Soon there'll be an app on your mobile that will even think for you - so you won't have to do a thing. EXCEPT , when you have…
