http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/28456 due to causing of premature death from emissions and dioxins
The current proposals for incineration whilst addressing landfill leave local regional residents to exposures from emissions that are potentially damaging to health - a number of more recent studies indicate the advocates of incineration say that modern WID compliant plants do not but there is no health evidence gathered to prove it.
There is a study being done by imperial college London but it is based on modelling and only looks at infant mortality. Incinerators adversely affect respiratory health pulmenory health and a range of other illnesses including sarcomas (the Sint nicolaas study highlights full range of potential illnesses that could occur if filtration system diesnt work) the degree of exposure depends on the emission breaches length of time of breaches etc studies exist that suggest living downwind increases the chance of being adversely affected due to exposures to Particulate matter 2.5 and 1s and dioxins. Modern WID compliant incinerators have been in operation nationwide since 2000 therefore due to the time lag of exposure to illness presentation health data should now be available to gather and map in accordance with the WHO mapping techniques for highlighting sources of illness presented yet no studies have yet been performed .... Until such time as evidence is available and peer reviewed no further incinerators should be passed as the public are rightly concerned about bringing up families within their shadow. It is a national issue yet currently is unaddressed due to lack of studies which in turn makes it harder to fight and oppose the proposals on health grounds.
What is worse is there are other renewable energy proposals that whilst have higher up front cost for operators in terms of set up costs they have cheaper energy production and are not as damaging to health as dioxins are completely destroyed and not given the opportunity to reform in the stack and equally the produce heat and power as a by product of steam production. Also solar and wind power and tidal also provide further opportunities for renewable energy production as too potentially will anaerobic digestion. Progressing with incineration which the USA and Europe are now moving away from in favour of safer emerging technology is burdening future generations to adverse health implications due to the lifespan of the plants and even will prevent us taking advantage if the cleaner technology.
