  This may well be the most important petition anyone ever signs. Alone, it may not the entire answer to our destruction of ecosystems. But the questions and debates that will come from it could really start to change the way most humans relate to this earth-for the better.

  Please help make ecocide a crime, do lobby your local representatives to adopti it and please spread the word as far and wide as possible, we need as many people on board as we can get to make ecocide a proper crime against peace which it is!

  Yes, I agree with this. What with the destruction of the Brazilian rainforests, and now this horrendous highway, it is essential that there is some way of protecting the land and bringing transgressors to book.

  Another example is proposed the Belo Monster Dam in Brasil.

  Many animals now extinct are so because of the wholesale destruction of their habitat - and this will apply equally to us unless we take the immediate step of declaring ecocide a crime against peace and against humanity.

  We cannot pretend that we don't see what is happening. Everything is interlinked and we are 'playing' with forces and laws we don't understand. If we destroy eco-systems, we destroy everything.

  The law is an important statement of what we believe to be "right" and "wrong" and has a big influence on our shared imagination. Too much of our civilisation is based on moral thinking tha predates both the population explosion and our use of fossil fuel: we can not longer treat the environment as if it is less important than human activity.

  ecocide is a crime against all of humanity including our unborn children and grandchildren. we need to ensure there's a world left for them to walk upon.
