A call for a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in the UK
'The oil and gas industry is seeking to exploit UK onshore gas reserves trapped in shale rock and coal beds requiring environmentally damaging and risky techniques, including hydraulic fracturing (fracking). We, the signatories of this petition, call on the coalition government in Westminster, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Scottish Parliament to impose a moratorium, demanded by environmental groups and geology experts in the field, on shale gas, and on the related coal bed methane extraction industry, at least until the results of studies here, in other countries in Europe and in the US have been properly evaluated. Such moratoria are already in place in France, North Rhine Westphalia (Germany), New York State, New Jersey.'

The Fracking carries risks that are too great, it shoul not go ahead especially in Balcombe, West Sussex, more information here:

Once you frack you cant put it back. Our most precious commodity is water, without it we are finished, the water used and wasted by fracking is lost, millions of gallons and its gone for ever.

This is a risky process that has not been properly evaluated. It has caused devastating environmental damage in the US and Australia where they have wide open spaces. We are an overcrowded island nation. Contamination of our water supply would be a monumental disaster - and if it happens - it cant be fixed!

Time to end extreme energy and put forward technologies that will work like the development of new carbon based graphene solar cells, methane extraction from biological food and human waste. The energy mix would be far less devastating than contaminating the nations water supply.

Fracking is one of the most urgent things facing people in this country. Anyone who is not up to speed on it needs to do some research - lots of evidence from the US of severe health problems to people and animals, land, air and water pollution, plus will add to global warming. Have a look on my Facebook page, lots of links.

I believe that my suggestion:

will allow us to move beyond these "backward" measures. Please vote. Cheers. Rich -

Fracking poses a wide range of potentially harmful risks to health, housing and environment.
Without consent, regions of the UK have been "licensed off" (i.e. sold) to private companies - outrageous!
Act before it's too late and halt fracking.
Dear government: please come up with a sensible energy policy. Not one built upon untested & dangerous and environmentally-unfriendly procedures such as fracking.

At the very bare minimum a moratorium should be held on this until we can CLEARLY establish the safety of this process. With fracking already occurring elsewhere in the world lets have a look at the pretty obvious environmental impacts this process has on the land and the people. We won't get a second chance once the fracking has occurred, that fracking fluid will be in the ground for a very long time. That gas has been in the ground for a long time and is not going anywhere fast so why the rush getting it out of the damm ground. Lets halt the lightning pace of adopting this technology before we know the real dangers.

Sepa probe at coal-bed methane wells
By Rob Edwards
Sunday 14 April 2013AN allegation that explosive and highly-polluting gas is leaking from boreholes in southwest Scotland are being probed by the Scottish Government's green watchdog.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) is launching an investigation into claims that methane is "bubbling up" in wells drilled to test for the gas in coal seams near Canonbie in Dumfries and Galloway. The claim is denied by the company that owns the wells.

In response to Mr Haywood Jablowme (clearly a well educated guy!) you have absolutely no idea what fracking will do to our environment do you? Please watch a film called 'gasland' which is about how fracking has affected America, and then tell us that we are whinging for nothing. How would you feel if you could not use the water that comes out of your tap because it contains poisonous chemicals. There is so much gas in their water supply they can actually light the water that comes out of the tap! Fracking also pollutes the air. At least in the dark ages we had a clean environment in which to survive! It's so important that we stop this from happening in the UK.

FRACKING IS THE FUTURE. WHY IS EVERYONE HERE SUDDENLY AN EXPERT? COLLECTIVELY YOU KNOW NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT IT. QUIT YOUR WHINGEING, ALL THE APPARENT EXPERTS ON HERE WOULD HAVE US LIVING IN THE DARK AGES.

We live in a small country - the impact of fracking may well be huge. People live near the proposed sites. Not, I would wager, the people promoting such lunacy?

Lets hope the mine shafts dont 'end up causing subsidence from the fracking and causing landslides which are not uncommon in Wales ,remember Aberfan.

Living only .5 mile away from proposed site I can only feel devastated with the descision made by this government to allow drilling and overrulling the Welsh Government. What are we doing to this country!

Hi Anonymous,
I have posted this on another thread there is a higher risk given G. Osborne's announcement of a tax break to the fracking industry and the formation of DECC's Office of Unconventional Gas that it the industry will accelerate development in the UK pretty rapidly meaning more people will be exposed to this:
We need to put a stop to this:

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) are letting Australian gas driller Dart Energy self regulate!
Dart Energy have been pumping water and methane out of coal seams on a site at Airth near Falkirk for over 8 months now. Recent enquiries and FOI requests submitted to SEPA have revealed that they have not tested this water at any stage. When asked about the composition of the water SEPA freely admit that the only testing carried out is by Dart.
Dart have a licence to dump 300,000 litres of water per day into this tank which is then released via the pipe into the Firth of Forth."
