I suggest a campaign about ...

Banning Page 3 as it symbolises the sexism, misogyny & oppression still rife in the UK

As a cultural icon, Page 3 symbolises not only the acceptance and normalisation of pornography within our daily newspapers but the sexual objectification of women and girls that permeates our culture in general - and thus, ultimately, symbolises our unequal status.

The death of sexism is a battle not yet won in this country and the proliferation of this image of women and girls within our mainstream press is perpetuating and fueling sexism by, at best, encouraging and endorsing negative attitudes towards us and within us, at worst, acts of violence commited against us. All of which grossly limit our choices, stall our progress and violate our human rights.

This campaign demands that the government addresses the subject of Page 3 today and by doing so demonstrates to society that it is serious about stamping out sexism once and for all. We cannot waste any more time and we will not wait any longer. The government either values and respects the female half of humanity or it doesn't and as a start, the removal of Page 3 from our every day lives, because of its cultural significance would be a momentus step in the right direction in proving to society that is does.

Together, we must work to eradicate all forms of sexism in order for women to become politically, socially, economically and personally equal to men. We cannot be a progressive and prosperous society otherwise.

Turn Your Back On Page 3.

Say NO to sexism.

DEMAND EQUALITY.

Have to agree with Jamie. As a guy from the southern hemisphere Page 3 was banned in Australia as it was deemed to be outdated, tacky and extremely demeaning towards women. Have my full support. Ban it...the sooner the better.

guy oliver - please don't insult our intelligence by suggesting that page 3 is the same sort of decoration as one would put on a christmas tree!!! also, buying gay times/diva is a little different to buying a newspaper! (obviously because you would expect gay times/diva to have sexual content - but that shouldn't be the case with a national NEWSpaper now should it!)

Claire Short attempted to ban page 3 years ago as demeaning towards women. Hopefully this latest attempt will work. Double standards; where has Page 7 gone? Page 3 is displayed in national newspapers. A topless, pouting, available girl is NOT news. Australia is obviously a far more progressive country than this country; they banned Page 3 as it sexually objectified women. The normalisation of this sexualised society we live in reflects what generation we are grooming. Not good!

Violet5 - and what exactly is wrong with doing something for decoration? My Christmas tree might take offence at that remark.

Why are people so keen to try and ban things? I find page 3 a little cheesy, but everyone is getting a little silly don't you think? Maybe we should ban sexy photos of girls in Diva magazine - the lesbian and bi European publication. Or maybe stop hot shoots of men with rippling abs in male underwear ads...or gay times.

        Seriously people.

Dan Factor....it has nothing to do with thinking men will react violently in a sexual manner towards women....it's to do with not wishing women to be objectified. If page 3 isn't just for decoration then what is it for ? It serves no other purpose.

(In case it wasn't clear - I object to that message!)
Get rid of this insulting hangover from the past, now!

Naked women in newspapers, along with the absence of senior female newsreaders of gravitas, illustrate the message loud and clear: News is made by men, for men, about men, in a man's world. Women are for decorative purposes only.

I couldn't believe it when Page 3 was first published - and I still can't believe it's allowed to exist. I often wonder how men would react if it was a male pin-up with his (surgically enhanced) bits out.

The campaign to ban page 3 is rooted in the elitist belief that the working class tabloid reading masses are incapable of seeing nude images of women without reacting violently in a sexual manner towards the women around them.
It should not be for the government to ban images and dictate what the press can and cannot publish.

Double standards. These type of downmarket tabloids who display the tasteless sight of Page 3 preach one thing and display and support an other. Page 3 is cheap, demeaning and past its time. Ban it!

The issue is not whether the women posing are there as a result of their free choice / being sexually liberated, but the fact that it is still a place for a pair of tits right in the middle of a major national newspaper - it's a case of reducing the woman to the sum of her parts in the main paper, whilst celebrating the achievements of the fellas at the back in the sport section. It's rubbish!

Page 3 is demeaning to women and sends the wrong messages to men that women are objects rather than people

Can't believe that Page 3 still exists actually - it's like some 70's relic! Should have gone long ago...

total support to you pippi. paul noonans views - just too sad for me to comment on. i was once in the situation that my young neice, on seeing the front page photo of a virtually naked girl in a suggestive pose, asked me why the lady had no clothes on, as someone that had worked with children for most of my adult life, it was the first time i had ever been at a loss as to how to explain something to a child............
