Campaign suggestions
Welcome!
What is this part of the website for?
- 38 Degrees members decide together what we campaign on. One way members can suggest campaigns is through this part of the website.
- This part of the website also helps determine how popular campaigns are through the voting system.
- You can vote on campaigns other 38 Degrees members suggest here You have up to 10 votes you can use.
How can I suggest a campaign?
- If you’ve got an idea for what 38 Degrees should campaign on please share it here.
-By adding your campaign idea here you’ll give other 38 Degrees members the opportunity to comment, suggest improvements and vote on your idea.
- The most popular suggestions made here will be put to 38 Degrees members to discuss and vote on in other ways – e.g. on our facebook, twitter and blog, and through email polls.
- Get involved and have your say – your campaign might be the next to start an avalanche!
How do I use my vote?
- Every member has up to 10 votes, which you are free to use how ever you want.
- If you really keen on a particular campaign, you can use more than one vote. – We will email you when when your ideas are completed or deleted as your votes will return to you.
- You can also change your votes by clicking on them.
- You’ll get a digested email of any activity on your ideas, comments, status changes and admin responses.
What happens to my campaign suggestions and votes?
- 38 Degrees campaigns are driven by what members want to do. Uservoice one of a number of ways in which 38 Degrees members can say what they one to the 38 Degrees to work on.
- If an idea is really popular on this Uservoice part of the website 38 Degrees will consult members about the idea in other ways e.g. through discussions on our blog and Facebook group and through member surveys.
- Please note that an idea being popular on this part of the website does not guarantee that it will become a 38 Degrees campaign. This is because firstly this area of the site is not visted by all 38 Degrees members and secondly because it is possible for non-members to vote. This can potentially skew the results. If in a member survey the wider 38 Degrees membership says other issues are more important, those issues will take priority.
- If 38 Degrees members vote that an idea should be a priority in our main member survey as well as on this part of the web site, the 38 Degrees office team will start work to turn it into a campaign. You can see the results of these main member surveys here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/tag/poll/
Can I ask others to boost the ranking of my issue?
- It might feel tempting to try and boost the ranking of your favorite issue by encouraging loads of people not involved with 38 Degrees to come and vote for it.
- Please don’t do this — this is intended as a space for 38 Degrees members to discuss together what they want us to do.
Are there any rules?
- It’s really important that the 38 Degrees website is a place where we can all have a healthy debate – which is why we don’t moderate comments or campaign suggestions before they are published. However, to ensure our site stays family friendly we have a few rules that you can read here:

Organise a huge march against the Health & Social Care Bill
The only thing keeping the bill on track is Cameron's support. The Tories are terrified that this will become their Poll Tax. Let's make it that. If enough people come out on the streets, they will drop the bill like a hot coal. This march could be organised with the help of other organisations.

Ban the use of snares in England
I work in a wildlife hospital & we deal with wild animals with horrific injuries after being caught in snares. We have many photos to prove the damage done by these inhumane cheese-wires. Domestic pets have also been severely injured by snares.
A ban on their use is long overdue.3,611 votes -
Pro wind farms. Let's be "for" something for a change!
Government seriously considering u-turn on wind; wind companies' investment on hold due to uncertainty; well-funded anti-campaigns. Is the viability of life on earth more important than a view?

Privatisation of the police
No to the privatisation of the Police!
West Midlands and Surrey Police Force have recently announced that they are to put £1.5 billion of Police Force responsibilities out for grabs to the private sector. This is likely to include frontline services such as:
bringing offenders to justice
investigating crimes
detaining suspects
protecting vulnerable individuals
supporting victims and witnesses
managing road safety. For the full list look here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/interactive/2012/mar/02/contract-note-bidders-police-services?fb=native

Forestry Commisson U-TURN - Delamere Forest once again under threat!
Despite the House of Lords overturning the sell off of our beloved Delamere Forest - the Forestry Commisson has prompted a consultation within a window of 1 month to build 70 holiday homes across the Forest creating a devastating impact on the wild life, trees and habitat.
PLEASE HELP US FIGHT THIS! Is there nowhere in the north west which is protected from development??!!
This area is vital protecting what wildlife we have left, and now the FC (gov) want to strip a huge area, laying pipes and leading to the inevitable human contamination.

40 Days To Block Royal Assent To The Health Bill
My name is John Langley, and the original driver behind the campaign to petition the Monarch to NOT grant Royal Assent of the Health Bill.
Since starting this campaign on Twitter at 6am yesterday (March 8th 2012) I have so far engaged the support of Lord Toby Harris to be the conduit for rallying the support of his House of Lords colleagues in petitioning the Queen.
It isn't as simple as communicating with Her Majesty direct, as it requires the 'Barons' to petition on our behalf.
The right to petition the Monarch is embedded in Article 61 of the Magna… more

Boycott Virgin to keep it out of the NHS.
Teach Branson not to mess with our public services:
Let's hit Virgin with a coordinated, widespread boycott in the broadband, mobile, air travel and other markets where it hurts.

A Campaign for an English Parliament - Political Equality for England
Political Equality for England. Which would allow people in England a far greater democratic involvement in English politics, and allow for a far greater and more direct accountability by MPs to people in England.
Scotland has its own Parliament, Wales has its own National Assembly, Northern Ireland its own Parliament/Assembly. ...Yet England doesn't have its own Parliament that deals with matters specific to England.
This would stop Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish MPs voting on English only matters. English MPs are not allowed to vote on matters specific to these other countries.

Ban 'sex for sale' advertising in all media
I want the Government to introduce legislation which will make it illegal for "sex for sale" advertisements to appear in any media. The legislation should cover all aspects of advertising including paper, electronic or other media and should also apply to those who promote, publish, distribute or otherwise allow such advertising.
Sex of all kinds is readily available to purchase through ads in newspapers, Adult Services classified Ads, on the internet. Fraud, deception and violence pull vulnerable women and children into the "sex trade" against their will. Traffickers earn huge tax-free profits through forced prostitution. Sex advertising increases the demand… more

Stop Fast Track Asylum Process For Colenatane Lopez (Sade)
Coletane Lopez ( Sade) is being held in a Yarl’s Wood detention centre in London after Claiming Asylum on Tuesday 13 March 2012. She was detained without notice and placed on a Fast Track Asylum Process. She has been denied any legal representation after being informed she would have legal representation immediately. She is now suicidal and on Hunger strike due to the unfair treatment and deliberate delay in providing her with a Solicitor. Sade has now very little time to prepare a legal case, and will only have a few days to appeal if her asylum claim is refused… more

Against UK Government proposal to monitor internet use - the greatest threat to privacy in the history of this country
The government's claim that the ability to monitor the internet and email will allow it to combat crime and terror is spurious. As has always been the case, the serious criminals will find ways around the new controls, while the innocent will lose their privacy. This was once a free country - it is turning into a police state!

Reverse the government's decision to abolish VAT relief on Listed Buildings works
In yesterday’s budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer made an astonishing, and unexpected, announcement that will affect a significant number of listed properties in the UK, and their owners.
The VAT relief that currently applies to alterations to listed buildings is being withdrawn with effect from 1 October 2012. The Chancellor described the existing relief as an ‘anomaly’, which “gives a perverse incentive for change as opposed to repair”. He also considers that the majority of the work covered by the relief consists of “extension work which is not necessary for heritage”. Admittedly, extensions currently qualify for VAT relief at… more170 votes -
Getting Justice for 21 Innocent Victims Murdered in the 1974 Birmingham Pub Bombings
The families of the innocent victims of this atrocity are still seeking justice after 37 years, where the perpetrators still have their liberty. Their fight for justice has continually been blocked by government for the convenience of the politicians without any forethought for the families still grieving and still in search of answers.

Support YOUR NHS!!
My name is Frances Hunt. I am a nuring degree student in the Birmingham area and also work as a HCA in the hospital environment.
I have silently followed the journey of the NHS Bill, now the Health and Social Care Act from when it started in 2010 to the present day. I will continue to follow this story and do everything I can to minimise the effects of this damaging, in my opinion, Act both at a local and national level!
Although there is not much tangibly we can do to change the Act, there are a HUGE number… more

The demands of people with Multiple Sclerosis are being ignored. It ruins the life of possibly 160,000 in the UK.
MS is a devastating set of symptoms that destroy the lives of sufferers and their family. The number of people affected by these symptoms is not known, there is an estimated figure of about 85,000 in the UK but early results of a survey undertaken under the freedom of information act suggest this might be half of the actual number. Problem is that as no one knows how many people suffer from MS, resources and services are not in place to help.
Another problem is that appeals for treatment and better service for people with MS fall on deaf ears… more353 votes -
Monsanto seed patent
Monsanto is in the process of acquiring and patenting their newest technology, known as "Terminator Technology." This technology is currently the greatest threat to humanity. If it is used by Monsanto on a large-scale basis, it will inevitably lead to famine and starvation on a worldwide basis.....
I have recently been horrified to read articles like this that inform us that seeds are being genetically modified - to resist pestacides (like Monsantos Roundup) and to become sterile so that farmers will have to buy seeds each year. big bucks for the seed sellers and more power to these huge corporations… more153 votes -
Company FairTax emblem
Similar to the 'FairTrade' emblem, companies that pay their fair due in tax for doing business in the UK would be awarded the emblem. Many smaller UK companies would get this by default when they don't do any (or a very small percentage) of overseas business.
The goal is to stop global multi national corporations doing business in the UK and then funnelling their business through foreign subsidary companies therefore paying minimal tax in the UK. Examples include Apple, Amazon etc. The Amazon example is of only paying £124 million in tax on £7 billion of revenue from the UK.

Freedom of Information requests must remain free!
Today's news that the Tory-led coalition is considering intriducing a charge for Freedom of Information requests is bad news indeed, though not surprising. Transparency is antithetic to the nepotic way Tories like to govern. It's this same mindset that drives their resistance to the legislation on having a register of lobbyists.

We must resist this retrograde step. FoI must be strengthened, day on day, week on week - we must fight for its continued existence and to keep it free.

Stop The Sale of Public Land and Forests in the UK
Councils in the UK own million of acres of land. Led by Somerset County Council, many are now considering privatising their public land and forests in a move which could dwarf the Government's attempted sell-off of the forests earlier in 2011. Somerset County Council has begun consulting on the sale of 2,000 acres of land in the Quantock Hills (the UK's first AONB), much of it Sites of Special Scientific Interest and forest. If Somerset County Council (SCC) is successful, other Councils are sure to follow. Help defeat SCC's privatisation plan and make sure that the forests sell-off doesn't happen… more
