Campaign suggestions
Welcome!
What is this part of the website for?
- 38 Degrees members decide together what we campaign on. One way members can suggest campaigns is through this part of the website.
- This part of the website also helps determine how popular campaigns are through the voting system.
- You can vote on campaigns other 38 Degrees members suggest here You have up to 10 votes you can use.
How can I suggest a campaign?
- If you’ve got an idea for what 38 Degrees should campaign on please share it here.
-By adding your campaign idea here you’ll give other 38 Degrees members the opportunity to comment, suggest improvements and vote on your idea.
- The most popular suggestions made here will be put to 38 Degrees members to discuss and vote on in other ways – e.g. on our facebook, twitter and blog, and through email polls.
- Get involved and have your say – your campaign might be the next to start an avalanche!
How do I use my vote?
- Every member has up to 10 votes, which you are free to use how ever you want.
- If you really keen on a particular campaign, you can use more than one vote. – We will email you when when your ideas are completed or deleted as your votes will return to you.
- You can also change your votes by clicking on them.
- You’ll get a digested email of any activity on your ideas, comments, status changes and admin responses.
What happens to my campaign suggestions and votes?
- 38 Degrees campaigns are driven by what members want to do. Uservoice one of a number of ways in which 38 Degrees members can say what they one to the 38 Degrees to work on.
- If an idea is really popular on this Uservoice part of the website 38 Degrees will consult members about the idea in other ways e.g. through discussions on our blog and Facebook group and through member surveys.
- Please note that an idea being popular on this part of the website does not guarantee that it will become a 38 Degrees campaign. This is because firstly this area of the site is not visted by all 38 Degrees members and secondly because it is possible for non-members to vote. This can potentially skew the results. If in a member survey the wider 38 Degrees membership says other issues are more important, those issues will take priority.
- If 38 Degrees members vote that an idea should be a priority in our main member survey as well as on this part of the web site, the 38 Degrees office team will start work to turn it into a campaign. You can see the results of these main member surveys here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/tag/poll/
Can I ask others to boost the ranking of my issue?
- It might feel tempting to try and boost the ranking of your favorite issue by encouraging loads of people not involved with 38 Degrees to come and vote for it.
- Please don’t do this — this is intended as a space for 38 Degrees members to discuss together what they want us to do.
Are there any rules?
- It’s really important that the 38 Degrees website is a place where we can all have a healthy debate – which is why we don’t moderate comments or campaign suggestions before they are published. However, to ensure our site stays family friendly we have a few rules that you can read here:

fairness, justice and equality for all British state pensioners
All people contribute towards the National Insurance scheme under exactly the same rules.
All people qualify for their state pension under exactly the same rules, based on years of NI contributions.
When it comes time to pay the state pension different rules are applied depending on where you happen to live.
If you live in the UK and in 40 overseas countries, your state pension is uprated for inflation each year.
If you live in mainly Commonwealth countries your state pension is frozen at the rate at which it is first paid, or as at the date of migration. This… more

A campaign to stop the abolition of Disability Living Allowance - the measure of civilised society.
DLA is by the DWP's own admission at least 20% under claimed and maybe as much as 40%. It is subject to a misinformation campaign by the Condems and their allies in the gutter press. Its abolition and replacement is nothing but a cost cutting exercise by the Condems and will cause huge suffering to disabled people and their carers. The abolition for DLA for those in care homes is positively cruel and should be opposed by everyone with a social conscience.

Resist the Criminalisation of Squatting
On 13th of July 2011, the government published a consultation paper:"Options
for dealing with Squatting". The consultation period ends on 5th October
2011 so we need to act NOW to be heard. The proposals outlined would affect a much wider community than those who
identify as squatters;- tenants would be at risk from unscrupulous landlords,
- worker and student occupations would be illegal, as would peace and climate camps.
- Police discretion is considered as a way of determining who is or is not a squatter
- violent and forcible eviction of squatters would be legal
- Anyone who… more

The coalition "are considering" assessing children in their DLA shake up.
In the DLA reform white paper they are "considering" reassessing disabled children, as well as adults. Not only do they want to cut the benefits bill by chucking of disabled adults they want to do the same to children. They have also sneeked in an item on carers allowance "they are looking at it" ie going to means test or abolish. In this proposal you also have the right to "ask" for an appeal. Not saying you will get an appeal, but you have the right to ask for one. Picking on the disabled and vulnerable is discusting.
2,284 votesWe’re looking into a technical problem with the suggest a campaigns system.
Last night we merged this with another DLA campaign after being asked to by the people who had originally created the suggestions. This follows on from previous problems we had with merging campaigns.
Unfortunately last night there was a problem with the system and when we merged the campaigns thousands of votes were removed from the total.
I’m really sorry this happened. We’re looking into this and trying to sort it out.

An amendment to the Bail Bill that will help prevent domestic violence murders
1 woman is murdered by a current or ex-partner in the uk every 3days. Last year Jane Clough was murdered by her ex - Vass who was on bail for 6 counts of rape, 3 assaults and 1 sexual assault. Despite objections by the Police and CPS. There is a petition that has been through the first stage and now needs signatures to support an amendment to the Bail allowing bail decisions to be appealled. Jane Clough and many other victims would be alive today if her (their) killer had not been granted bail.

Protect Mobility Allowance for disabled adults from the coalition Government's cuts
One reduction included in the coalition Government's budget cuts last week was the removal of the mobility allowance part of Disability Living Allowance for adult disabled people living in residential care.
Without mobility payments, getting out of the house for even simple things like going to the library or GP will be impossible for some disabled people, and their quality of life will be severly affected, in exchange for a relatively tiny sum of money being saved.
This is part of the Chancellor's proposed budget cuts and is not yet law. So there is still time to try and make… more

ban on throwing away food at shops
I was at tesco express earlier. It was about 10.30pm, the shop closed at 11pm. there were bags and bags of baked goods being thrown away. They hadn't even been reduced. Why can't this food be given to local homeless shelters? Or even sold at very low costs, the money being donated to charities that help feed starving third world countries? The entire idea of throwing out perfectly good food is completely preposterous.

Transparancy in the Welfare System for the Sick.
Campaign to force the DWP (department of work and pensions) to release the software (LIMA) used by ATOS at benefit assessments for incapacity benefit, and ESA (employment and support allowance).
This software is owned by the DWP, and the DWP gets royalties when other companies use it.
Despite heavy critisicm of both the software, and the system in general, from many parties, the sick are routinely being denied benefits due to incorrect assessments.
We believe the software is not fit for purpose, and if it was made available to the public, for inspection, then it could be proved to be… more

protesting against the proposal to oblige the umployed to work for free
The Government wants to oblige the unemployed to work for free in the communities while cutting services. It is outrageous that the unemployed should supply services for free, it amounts to a modern form of 'slavery'. We need to speak loud against this proposal and we need to demand that community services are not scrapped and that they are properly resourced!

Ban Smoking In Cars Carrying Children
Research suggested more than 300,000 children visited doctors every year with health problems associated with passive smoke, while there were 20,000 new cases of asthma and wheezing among children every year. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of passive smoking and while adults can make up their mind about the dangers of smoking, children are unable to decide whether or not to go in cars where cigarette smoke is circulating. We need to protect children.

Unfair and discriminatory changes to Womens' pensions. Pension postponed 6 years because I'm 56!
The Goverment is proposing to change Womens' pension eligibility. If you fall into the age group 56 or younger your entitlement to a State Pension will be postponed for many years. I am 56 and I will have to wait another 6 years for mine! These changes have been imposed without giving women enough time to plan to work for another six years...he proposals for men are not nearly so draconian!

Pub soft drink prices
It is outrageous that in today's anti-drink driving culture, and in light of the proposed minimum price for alcohol, that Public Houses are allowed to charge huge mark-ups on soft drinks such as cola and lemonade. Government should take action, specifically The Home Office which has overview of Licensing, to regulate the maximum price that can be charged for soft drinks in Public Houses. I have recently been charged £5 for a Pint of a well known Diet Cola, whereas the same pub had it's standard lager at £2.50 per pint. It makes no sense and action is required.

Universal State Pension
Proposed State Pension changes to a 'universal' State Pension for NEW PENSIONERS ONLY is discriminatory and will create a two tier system for existing pensioners who have not only paid NI contributions but may have paid in to a private/occupational pension as well. This will discriminate on age grounds and surely cannot be acceptable under Equal Rights legislation. It will widen the gap between the UK State Pension and that of other EU countries - surely this cannot be acceptable under EU legislation.

End Legal Loansharking
Compass are currently running a campaign to introduce a cap on interest rates and stop companies, such as Wonga, from charging disgusting interest rates of up 3700% on short term loans. These companies target the poorest in society, who are dependant on them in a time of austerity. There is currently a Private Member's bill in its second reading going through Parliament. It is facing a backbench business committee vote as a cross-bench bill (a similar situation to the Gurkha bill) and a petition would raise awareness of this exploitation and aid its transition into law.

Sayce Review recommends the disabilty employment champion Remploy is closed down
The Government commissioned Liz Sayce to conduct a review of the provision of support for the employment of the disabled in the UK. Published in June the Sayce Review principle suggestion is the Remploy a NGD under the DWP is closed or moved into the private sector. This would effectively mean the closure of 54 factories and the redundancy of over 2,500 disabled workers.
The choice of Liz Sayce is surprising as she is known in the sector to be opposed to Remploy, and was signatory too an open letter to the Guardian Newspaper in 2007 calling for Remploy to… more

Fight a ban on feeding the homeless
Westminster council want to introduce a bylaw effectively making it illegal to provide food to the homeless, including fines being handed to those who break this law. This is an appaling move, especially when the 'Big Society' is being touted as a method of solving social issues like this.
