Campaign suggestions
Welcome!
What is this part of the website for?
- 38 Degrees members decide together what we campaign on. One way members can suggest campaigns is through this part of the website.
- This part of the website also helps determine how popular campaigns are through the voting system.
- You can vote on campaigns other 38 Degrees members suggest here You have up to 10 votes you can use.
How can I suggest a campaign?
- If you’ve got an idea for what 38 Degrees should campaign on please share it here.
-By adding your campaign idea here you’ll give other 38 Degrees members the opportunity to comment, suggest improvements and vote on your idea.
- The most popular suggestions made here will be put to 38 Degrees members to discuss and vote on in other ways – e.g. on our facebook, twitter and blog, and through email polls.
- Get involved and have your say – your campaign might be the next to start an avalanche!
How do I use my vote?
- Every member has up to 10 votes, which you are free to use how ever you want.
- If you really keen on a particular campaign, you can use more than one vote. – We will email you when when your ideas are completed or deleted as your votes will return to you.
- You can also change your votes by clicking on them.
- You’ll get a digested email of any activity on your ideas, comments, status changes and admin responses.
What happens to my campaign suggestions and votes?
- 38 Degrees campaigns are driven by what members want to do. Uservoice one of a number of ways in which 38 Degrees members can say what they one to the 38 Degrees to work on.
- If an idea is really popular on this Uservoice part of the website 38 Degrees will consult members about the idea in other ways e.g. through discussions on our blog and Facebook group and through member surveys.
- Please note that an idea being popular on this part of the website does not guarantee that it will become a 38 Degrees campaign. This is because firstly this area of the site is not visted by all 38 Degrees members and secondly because it is possible for non-members to vote. This can potentially skew the results. If in a member survey the wider 38 Degrees membership says other issues are more important, those issues will take priority.
- If 38 Degrees members vote that an idea should be a priority in our main member survey as well as on this part of the web site, the 38 Degrees office team will start work to turn it into a campaign. You can see the results of these main member surveys here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/tag/poll/
Can I ask others to boost the ranking of my issue?
- It might feel tempting to try and boost the ranking of your favorite issue by encouraging loads of people not involved with 38 Degrees to come and vote for it.
- Please don’t do this — this is intended as a space for 38 Degrees members to discuss together what they want us to do.
Are there any rules?
- It’s really important that the 38 Degrees website is a place where we can all have a healthy debate – which is why we don’t moderate comments or campaign suggestions before they are published. However, to ensure our site stays family friendly we have a few rules that you can read here:

Illegal EU Caged Egg Imports from 2012
From 1st January 2012, it will be illegal to keep hens in battery cages anywhere in the European Union. However, despite having had 12 years to implement the regulations laid down by the Laying Hens Directive 1999, some EU member states will fail to reach the deadline and are seeking an extension for their farmers. This could result in millions of hens being kept in battery cages illegally, and millions of battery eggs entering the UK illegally, potentially hidden in processed foods such as ready meals, pasta, cakes etc.
British farmers have invested £400m to comply with this legislation. However,… more

Stop Greyhound Exports to China
The Irish Government plans to export Racing Greyhounds to China, a country which has one of the worst Human & Animal Rights Records in the world.
As an Irish Citzen & UK resident, I am appalled & embarassed to be Irish.
I appeal to all members to support a petition to present to the UK government in order for them to put pressure on the Irish government to abandon these plans.
What with the first ever upcoming visiit by the Queen, (a well-know dog & animal lover), to the Republic of Ireland shortly, an expose would be greatly embarassing to… more811 votes -
Call on the UK government to support women's rights in Afghanistan
When the UK entered Afghanistan 10 years ago, they promised to improve the lives of Afghan women. While some progress has been made, there is growing concern that women's rights will be left out. When it comes to discussions around transition and peace, women are being marginalised and ignored. Ask the UK government to make good on their promises to Afghan women and ensure that they are included at the upcoming Bonn conference on Afghanistan and that the promotion, protection and realisation of women’s rights are absolutely central to the discussion.
By using diplomatic pressure, funding Afghan women's organisations to… more

Repeal US-UK Extradition Treaty, & Ban Extradition without Contestable Prima Facie Evidence
The US-UK extradition treaty (signed secretly under Queen's prerogative) and the Extradition Act (2003) effectively remove all protection from UK citizens against unjust extradition. Despite being denounced as an anathema to justice by Liberty, the ACLU and eminent legal consensus in the UK, and despite a series of resulting high-profile injustices, the Treaty & the Act are currently undergoing very expensive 'review' by the government to decide whether this blatantly unfair legislation is fair or not. The law as it stands means that anyone can be extradited to the USA and the recently publicised brutality of its prison system without… more

Freeze UK-based Mubarak family assets
Urge the UK government to follow Switzerland's lead in freezing UK-based assets of the Mubarak family. The Guardian reports that Mubarak family fortune could reach $70 billion, some of which may be held in HBOS accounts, part of the Lloyds group which is 41% owned by the UK government.
That money must not be allowed to leave the UK and should be returned to Egypt in a proper and timely fashion..
Former foreign office minister Lord Malloch-Brown has urged the UK to act:
"I think it would be a very prudent thing to do to freeze suspicious accounts here because… more

100k signatures in support of Wikileaks
Tory policy on “Cleaning up politics” states that "will ensure that any petition that secures 100,000 signatures will be eligible for formal debate in Parliament”. I would like 38 Degrees to have a campaign whichs seeks 100,000 signatures expressing support for Wikileaks in exposing the endemic cynicism curruption in national governments, especially the US, UK and Russia.

Drop Egypt's Debt
Hosni Mubarak pillaged Egypt’s economy, and leaves office with $70 billion in his family’s bank account. But he also bequeaths $30 billion in debt to the Egyptian people. This debt is illegitimate - much of it being run up to buy arms and other Western goods which benefited the regime and kept it in power. The UK is 'owed' £100 million by Egypt, but the British Government won't tell us how the loans were used.
People should not pay unjust ‘dictator debts’, nor should they pay debts whose origins are kept secret.
- The British Government must immediately come clean… more

Stop war with Iran at all costs. Don't let our government and media make it seem just or innevitable
We are careering toward a war with Iran. While America beefs up it's arms in the area, provokes Iran wth verbal threats of action and while it supports the villainisation of Iran the media are trying to convince us that the war is just.
Let's stand up and say no to a war with Iran at all costs. By diplomacy only.109 votes -
Post Concussion Syndrome (P.C.S & P.P.C.S) Awareness in the UK - This hidden Epidemic is REAL!
Having had PPCS for 4 years following an accident, I realised that barely nobody in the public health services (NHS) or public arena is taking notice, or ready to tackle the hidden epidemic. Over 75% of cases are misdiagnosed & treatment is only available privately at great cost. We need to change something! Please invite friends so we can spread awareness & get action for the forgotten sufferers of this 'Hidden/Invisible Disability' by getting confirmed action on a wide scale from Government & NHS... Although this is also an international issue effecting people worldwide! Please vote & help us?

Plastic bottles, the curse of our time?
A “plastic soup” of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is growing at an alarming rate and now covers an area twice the size of the continental United States, scientists have said. And this isn't the only one. Is this the curse of our time?
Plastic bottles are at the heart of the problem. Manufactured, filled and then left for society to dispose of, they are everywhere. But imagine if the producers of plastic bottles were responsible for them even after we had consumed what was inside them. Imagine if we all sent our bottles back to the company that… more

Block the US 'SOPA' bill as this affects not simply the US but all of the world due to the restrictions it places on the internet
The US parliment is trying to push through a bill which will limit internet piracy. While this seems like a worthwile thing in itself the way in which it is being proposed will mean that any and all sites in which people share information will be restricted in some way. The worst hit are actually the big sites such as Youtube or Facebook where the moderators will be legally required to block any information in which there could be piracy. This could include news stories copied off the BBC website or a homemade video of a gig which you went… more

UK companies' use of coltan fueling human rights nightmare in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Coltan is a mineral used in electronics, including all of our computers and mobile phones. 80% of the world's coltan is found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and their proxy militias are the primary exploiters of coltan in the Congo, which is bought by multinational corporations, whom the UN has described as "the engine of the conflict in the DRC." The war in the Congo has claimed an estimated three million lives, either as a direct result of fighting or because of disease and malnutrition. More than 8,300 women were raped during fighting in 2009, and… more

End the Nuclear Weapons-armed world.
The World Wars are over. The Cold War is over. Nuclear Weapons were the shiny new toys of the last century.
Let this century see their eradication.
Ban ALL Nuclear Weapons EVERYWHERE - not just in those countries we don't want to have them.

Stand up to the EU
We should push the British government to stand up to the EU. Why should we bow down to an unellected, quangoistic minority rule that fails to reflect the interests of our country.
Regardless of whether or not you think prisoners should have a vote, we should be able to choose for ourselves with out fearing repercussions from the EU.
Forcing women to have more expensive car insurance in line with men, whilst going against objective statistical data is crazy! Every woman could stand to pay more for their car insurance as a direct result of mindless European legislation.

Ask the Chinese Government to outlaw Bear Bile Milking
Arguably the worst form of animal cruelty on the planet, you can find out more about Bear Bile here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bile_bear
A recent report from: http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/Asia/Story/A1Story20110805-292947.html
The Chinese media has reported on an extraordinary account of a mother bear saving her cub from a life of torture by strangling it and then killing itself.
The bears were kept in a farm located in a remote area in the North-West of China. The bears on the farm had their gall bladders milked daily for 'bear bile,' which is used as a remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
It was reported that the… more33 votes -
9/11 Truth
I'm sure this will be controversial, especially when we've all seen the possible "conspiracy theories" surrounding the horrendous day.
However...
What is vital for me is, their does seem to be alot of people who felt the 100% truth never came out, so anything we in England can do to help this would be fantastic.
Sounds crazy but maybe we can all bring some vital peace surrounding this shady area!
